 Collier County Heritage Trail

Here are the new and exciting undertakings for the Collier County Heritage Trail:
  • In the Spring of 2009 we completed and submitted a proposal to the Florida Department of Transportation to request to begin the designation process of The Collier County Heritage Trail.
  • In the Summer of 2009 we completed a request for assistance from the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program provided through the National Park Service.
  • We are currently working on two policies with the Rural Land Stewardship Committee and the City Heritage Trail is in process.

This progress stemmed from the Feasibility Study undertaken last year.

In September of 2008, Naples Cultural Landscape, along with Dr. Lois Bolin and Noah Standridge began a dialogue with the Rural Land Stewardship Committee and related property owners on how to safeguard our local history.  This dialogue representes a historic moment: it is the first time in Collier County's history that local "heritage and culture" were asked to be considered in any decision making process.  The intent was to ensure that the memories of the pioneers of Collier County had a voice along with our irreplaceable animals and environment.

Proposed Amendment to the Rural Lands Stewardship Overlay to promote and safeguard cultural heritage or archaeological resources

Policy 5.7

May 8, 1923 Collier County Was Birthed - Founding Families on Proclomation DayMay 8, 1923 the great county of Collier was birthed.  At the 2009 Proclomation reading, founding families before 1923 and representative of the Collier families attened.  Lavern Norris Gayor (far left), Co- Founder of Naples Backyard History, represented the City of Naples.

Interpretation of our local culture is important both economically and socially.  It was made abundantly clear that our intention was never to intrude upon property right of citizens. It was made abundantly clear that our history must never be forgotten and that synchronized proactive steps need to happen to ensure that the true magic of the place we call home is never lost or worse - rewritten.
